Dutch Meatballs Recipes

In Holland, a night out in the town, or a social event with coworkers, usually start out at a local café, with a beer or two and something to snack on. This "something" is called a "bittergarnituur". The word is translated into English as the slightly confusing "garnish for bitters", where bitters in this case refers to alcoholic beverages.

Frikadeller is the Danish national dish and it is very easy to prepare. Frikadeller are flat, pan-fried meatballs made of beef and pork. A typical Danish Frikadeller dinner includes Danish red cabbage, Danish cucumber salad, sugar brown potatoes and brown gravy. 

Swedish meatballs, or ‘köttbullar’, must be prepared, above all, with love. There are many different favourite recipes. Some people feel there should be grated onion in the meatball mixture itself, while others prefer to dice the onion and fry it separately. Some people feel that their meatballs should be served with thick brown gravy, while others prefer it with a thin meat juice. As part of a smorgasbord buffet, it is better to skip the gravy altogether.
