Lower Saxony


Not to be confused with the Milky Way, the Lower Saxony Milk Route links milking parlours and farms on a 190 km picturesque tour past sandy heathland, marshes and moors, to provide a microcosm of the dairy industry.

This local breed of sheep is found in Germany, within the wetlands of the Diepholzer Moorniederung nature reserve. Its meat is typically tender, with a high degree of characteristic flavour and good colour stability. The major factor in the breed’s conservation is the existence of three breeding farms.

Asparagus is one of the most important products in German Gastronomy and during “asparagus season”, between April and June, it stars in a lot of seasonal dishes. One of the most interesting destinations to taste authentic German asparagus is Lower Saxony, the “country of asparagus”, where one in five Germans grow it.
